In 1801 the existing building was constructed by Baron Farnborough. The Baron was known as the “King’s Spectacles” for his influence on the Regency Kings George IV and William IV.
The Regency Court arrived here on Bromley Hill a number of times, always with a great many notables, including the Prime Ministers of the age William Pitt the Younger and the Duke of Wellington.
A collector and patron of the Arts, published writer and artist, Baron Farnborough was founder of the Royal Academy of Arts, the Royal Institution of British Architects and the British Museum. When King George IV decided to remodel Windsor Castle the Baron even prepared the plan.
The Baron’s Wife Amelia Lane, was also an artist and the designer of the Italianate Gardens here at Bromley court, including the two large clay urns, which can be seen in the gardens today. After Baron Farnborough died the Estate was eventually broken up and developed as housing. The main house was converted into a Hotel in 1931 by Leon Frenkel a successful businessman.
